ImageThe Philippine Human Rights Reporting Project held its 10th training on reporting extrajudicial killings in Malolos, Bulacan on May 8.

A total of 66 persons – a mix of professional journalists, journalism students and journalism professors – took part in the training.

Bulacan, the nearest province north of Manila, is where University of the Philippines students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeno went missing with farmer Manuel Merino on June 26, 2006. Armed men believed to be military allegedly took them forcibly in Hagonoy town. They have not surfaced since.

ImageThe training helped participants understand basic human rights concepts, define EJKs and distinguish these from ordinary crimes, determine probable EJKs and report on these properly.

The training also provided practical tips in finding sources for EJK stories, observing ethics and ensuring safety during coverage. The participants also underwent workshop on barriers in reporting EJK and possible solutions to these.

The training was made possible in collaboration with the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, one of the Project partners.
