11th EJK reporting training held in Pagadian May 17 PDF Print E-mail

A total of 45 journalists covering Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga Peninsula, Western Mindanao were trained May 17 on reporting extrajudicial killings (EJK).

The journalists from broadcast, print and online media outlets found the training as useful because their area of coverage continues to see different conflicts linked to or blamed for alleged cases of EJKs –including conflicts between the military and the communist insurgents, charges by indigenous peoples of land grabbing and encroachment against multinational mining firms, and kidnap-for-ransom activities.

The journalists were provided inputs on human rights laws and treaties, thorough discussion on the right to life as opposed to EJKs, and special considerations in covering EJK.

The journalists also discussed recent developments which have bearing on their duty to report EJKs, such as difficulty to access information from government agencies and the much-contested Right of Reply bill.

A workshop towards the end of the training helped journalists identify barriers in reporting EJK and possible solutions to these. They also had a workshop in proper sourcing for EJK reports.

The EJK reporting is among the dedicated training design modules of the Philippine Human Rights Reporting Project as means to improve human rights reporting.
