Media dialogue on MOA-AD held August 14
Posted Friday, 15 August 2008
The Philippine Human Rights Reporting Project led in organizing on
August 14 a media dialogue in Manila on the controversial Memorandum of
Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) of the peace agreement between
government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
The media dialogue was held to address misconceptions and inflammatory reports appearing in the media due to lack of information on the agreement and its processes. Co-organizers of the media dialogue are the Center for Community Journalism and Development, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and the Mindanao Peoples Caucus.
Panelists were Prof. Rudy Rodil, vice chairperson of the government peace panel with MILF; Atty. Musib Buat, MILF peace panel member; Atty. Mary Ann Arnado, MPC secretary general; Bayan Muna party list Rep. Satur Ocampo; and Mindanao journalist Froilan Gallardo. More than 80 individuals from the media, civil society, churches, academe and government attended the media dialogue.
Ocampo, also Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, said the US government has a major role in brokering the peace deal because of its interest on oil and other natural resources in southern Philippines. Rodil and Buat, meanwhile, appealed to let the MOA-AD prosper because this may be the solution to the volatile peace situation in Mindanao.
Arnado disputed claims from the pact’s critics that settlers would be evicted from Mindanao once it is approved.
Gallardo appealed to fellow journalists to report on the MOA-AD and the renewed armed clashes responsibly. “Please do not exacerbate an already emotional issue. Write, air and broadcast to enlighten not add to the confusion,” he said in his open letter.
Organizers plan to have a follow through of the dialogue in different parts in Mindanao to contribute to better public and media understanding of the peace process.
